Nate James is one of the UK's premier British soul singer-songwriters. Nate released his debut album, Set The Tone, in 2005, which was heavily influenced by classic soul artists such as Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder and earned him two MOBO nominations in 2005 and another in 2006. He was also nominated as Best Urban Artist at the 2006 BT Digital Music Awards and performed at the ceremony backed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
It's been a long way from the small showcase circuit in London where he learned his craft to performing alongside the likes of Corrine Bailey Rae and John Legend. It's even further away from the sleepy town of Woodbridge in Suffolk where he was brought up by his soul music loving family. Having sold over 125,000 albums and with the release of his new album, we thought it was time to stop Nate and ask him a few questions
Not to sound too deep but life experience is my inspiration. You can only write about what you feel and what feels right. And it could be anything from hanging out with your mates to spending time in third world countries and being hit by how bad things are.....sometimes writing a song helps to understand a situation.
It has to be seeing people's faces in the crowd, whether it is a small gig for 200 or a festival for 200,000. I love to feel that my music makes people smile and sing along.
I think putting my second album out independently is my highlight. Being a self financed artist things can get a little tough, but these days so few artists get to their second album I'm really proud to be able to do it myself.
In terms of exercise, I go to the gym at least three times a week, concentrating on intense cardio and weight training so my body is ready for touring. I also have vocal lessons and warm ups to do before gigs. My diet is basically no rubbish, just good stuff (and the occasional treat!)
Listen to your body; don't work yourself into the ground. Eat well, drink loads of water, and get your vitamins.
The strawberry is the ruler of all berries. Especially when they're in peak season - all sweet and juicy. For me the best way to eat them is with a sprinkle of sugar in the sunshine.
