This month Seasonal Berries talks to Dr Greg Martin on behalf of the World Cancer Research Fund. WCRF UK is dedicated to saving lives by funding cancer research and providing education programmes that expand our understanding of the importance of our food and lifestyle choices in the cancer process. They recently launched their second expert report, the most comprehensive report on the subject ever published, which includes a series of recommendations that people can incorporate into their daily lives.
Since 1990, World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF UK) has been supporting research into the role of diet and nutrition in the prevention of cancer.
I've been involved as the head of the science department since 2006.
Clearly, cancer is a really important issue, both in the UK and across the world. I have always believed that prevention is better than cure, and this gives me the chance to be part of an organisation that focuses on prevention.
I enjoy working with the team here, and what never ceases to impress me is the dedication and commitment of everyone here to making a real difference.
Our Expert Report is the most comprehensive report of its type ever published, so I'm proud to have been project manager of it.
One of the big challenges we face is getting across the message that we are not telling anyone what to do. All we are doing is giving people the scientific information so they can then make informed lifestyle choices.
WCRF released their Expert Report in November 2007 and is the most comprehensive report on cancer prevention ever produced. Can you give Seasonal Berries readers an idea of what it takes to compile this report?
It was a massive piece of work that involved nine teams of scientists analysing research, and then a panel of 21 experts making recommendations. This meant an awful lot of work for everyone involved but because of how rigorous it was, it means that people can be confident that it represents the best advice on cancer prevention anywhere in the world.
The research shows that fruits can probably help protect against different types of cancer, and that's why we recommend that you should aim to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. It's also good to eat a wide range of fruits, as this means you'll be getting different nutrients. Berries can form part of this.
In a nutshell, people should maintain a healthy weight, eat a plant-based diet, and be physically active every day. If you're doing those three things then you're on the right track.
Funnily enough, we asked England footballer Michael Owen this question and he said the raspberry, and I'm going to have to agree with him.
It might sound boring, but I think they're great on their own. Why mess with perfection?
