Berries are packed with antioxidants for youthful skin

Berries have a high Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC), which means they have a lot of antioxidant activity. As well as containing vitamin C, berries also contain naturally occurring plant compounds called flavonoids particularly anthocyanins, which are found in larger amounts in blueberries and blackberries.

In general, berries have a much higher ORAC value than many other fruits and vegetables, including apples, apricots, grapes, kiwi fruit, mango, melon, oranges, asparagus, green beans, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, onions, peppers, rocket, spinach, sweet potatoes and tomatoes.

This is great news for skin as antioxidants help to mop up an excess of free radicals, molecules that have the potential to damage cells. Most cells, including those in the skin, can be affected by free radical damage, so boosting intakes of antioxidants by eating more berries, may help to keep the skin healthy.
