British blueberries will be available in substantial quantities in supermarkets for the first time ever this summer. Growers have been busy planning for sometime and having been planted five years previously, the first bushes have matured and are now bearing fruit.
Before now, blueberries have originated from Chile and the USA and are imported to Britain all year round as they have become increasingly popular due to their strong health and beauty benefits.
Blueberries are an essential summer superfood. They are low in calories, they can increase vitality, aid hang-over recovery, are a good source of vitamin C, help maintain youthful looking skin and boost the immune system due to their high levels of anti-oxidants. Much of their antioxidant strength comes from the anthocyanin pigments that tint berries red, black, blue and purple; so the darker the berry, the better.
The peak British blueberry season will be for about six weeks during July and August.
